commercials

The first day of watching TV for commercials I watched Tarzan on Disney XD. Most of the commercials were toys for kids such as Lego’s, Hot Wheels, and My Little Pony. There were a few about when you can catch a new episode of your favorite show and some of the commercials were for the adults, maybe watching the show with their kids.  Personally the one that I found the most exciting was the Hot Wheels commercials. They have a track that can stick to the wall!  Check that out. You have to admit that looks pretty cool.

The second day I watched CSI Miami on AMC. The commercials on this channel were more directed at adults with commercials on food, insurance, cars, etc. The most interesting commercial in that hour was the Netflix commercial. It had the hamsters looking at the cage next door and seeing them watching movies on Netflix. Unlike most of the commercials on that channel this commercial was directed at everyone. The kids will see the cute furry creatures beg their parents to get Netflix because hamsters watch it. Also, parents just like the idea of Netflix so they are more likely to get it.
These channels were so different that it’s hard to find a connection. The best two connections I can think of is when the commercials on Disney XD were directed at adults because most of the commercials on AMC were also directed at adults. Also, the Netflix commercial having a bit of a child like side to relate to children is a bit like the commercials on Disney. I don’t know how else to compare them because of the major differences between the target audience in the channels. I apologize if this blog is boring. At least I tried to spice it up with a picture of that awesome Hot Wheels track. Have a good weekend!

  2. That race track is pretty sweet. Commercials for kids are always really interesting to me because the majority of them are trying to sell toys or food to them and they pair it with high energy music, favorite real -life or cartoon icons, and happy kids who seem to be having a lot of fun with the product. I find it disconcerting because these commercials "hook" kids in and try to make them life-long consumers that rely on materialism for happiness. I know because my generation was the first to really get bombarded with this type of advertising, and I now noticed that if I'm ever feeling down, I go shopping. And even if I don't buy anything, it soothes me. Weird, huh?

I think you are right on the connection with Netflix being child-friendly with their use of hamsters. Especially since Netflix's instant has so many family and kid shows available, the family has become the center for their audience target, I think.
